Guthrie, (William) Tyrone

Guthrie, (William) Tyrone (1900-1971)

English theatre director. He was notable for his innovative approach. Administrator of the Old Vic and Sadler's Wells theatres 1939-45, he helped found the Ontario (Stratford) Shakespeare Festival in 1953 and the Minneapolis theatre now named after him. He pioneered the modern concept of open-stage productions for medieval and Renaissance plays. He was knighted in 1961.
