Guthrum

Danish king of East Anglia. He led a large Danish invasion of Anglo-Saxon England 878 but was defeated by King Alfred at the Battle of Edington 878. His reign 880-890 was mostly peaceful.

Guthrum (died 890)

Danish soldier. He was defeated by Alfred at the battle of Edington, Wiltshire (878). The subsequent treaty at Wedmore divided England between the Danes and Alfred. The portion north and east of a line running approximately from Chester to London became the ‘Danelaw’.

He was one of the leaders of the Danish invading army which encamped near Reading (871) and later fought against both Ethelred and Alfred. After the treaty at Wedmore, Guthrum occupied East Anglia. He was baptised at Aller with Alfred as his godfather.
