Guy-Ropartz, Joseph Guy Marie Ropartz (1864-1955)

French composer. After studying law, he went to the Paris Conservatory as a pupil of François Dubois, Jules Massenet, and César Franck. In 1894 he became director of the Nancy Conservatory and in 1919 of that of Strasbourg. Later he retired to Brittany, where he was born.

four operas, including Le Pays (1913); ballet L'Indiscret.

three Masses, motets, and other church music.

Orchestral

five symphonies (1895-1945), La Cloche des morts, La Chasse du Prince Arthur.

Chamber

six string quartets (1893-1951); three violin and piano sonatas, two cello and piano sonatas.
