Guyot, Arnold

Guyot, Arnold (Henry) (1807–1884)

Swiss geographer and natural scientist. A pioneer in the study of Alpine glaciation, in 1848 he travelled to the USA to give lectures at the Lowell Institute; these were published as The Earth and Man (1849). In 1854 he joined the faculty of the College of New Jersey (later known as Princeton University). Also knowledgeable in meteorology and topography, he founded the US weather station system and measured the altitudes of the Applachian mountains from Maine to South Carolina. He was born in Boudevilliers, Switzerland.
