Diomede Islands

Two islands in the Bering Strait, off the tip of the Seward peninsula, Alaska, that lie about midway between the continents of America and Asia. Little Diomede (area: 6.2 sq km/2.4 sq mi) belongs to the USA and is only 3.9 km/2.4 mi from Big Diomede (area: 29.3 sq km/11.3 sq mi) or Ratmanov, which is owned by Russia. They were first sighted by the Danish navigator Vitus Bering in 1728 and named for St Diomede. A small population of Inuit from the Ingalikmiut group inhabit the islands and maintain a subsistence lifestyle based on seal, walrus, and fish. Diomede City on Little Diomede had 146 people at the 2000 census.
