Gwendoline

Opera by Emmanuel Chabrier (libretto by C Mendès), first produced at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels, Belgium, on 10 April 1886. In the story, Gwendoline, daughter of the Saxon leader Armel, is to marry the Dane Harald. Armel plans to massacre the Danes during the festivities. Gwendoline tries to warn Harald, but it is too late and kills herself.
