Gweru

Town in central Zimbabwe, 200 km/124 mi southwest of Harare on the railway line to Bulawayo; population (2002 est) 141,300. Large quantities of chrome ore, asbestos, and other base minerals are mined within a 50 km/30 mi area. Gweru is also the centre of a cattle-rearing area. Local industries include ferro-chrome processing, tanning, shoes, glass-making, steel-founding, precision engineering, milling, cereal products, and brewing.

The town was founded in 1849 as a small gold-mining centre; the gold deposits have been almost exhausted.
