Hänsel und Gretel

Opera by Engelbert Humperdinck (libretto by A Wette, Humperdinck's sister, from a tale by the brothers Grimm), first produced in Weimar, Germany, on 23 December 1893. It is based on the fairy tale: using her gingerbread house as bait, the wicked witch preys on hungry children, but Hänsel and Gretel outwit her, saving themselves and all her previous victims.
