Hotan

Town and oasis in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China; population (2000) 101,800. It lies at the northern end of the Kunlun Mountains and on the edge of the Taklimakan Desert, about 200 km/124 mi southeast of Shache. Hotan was formed by the union of two small towns, Kara Kash and Yurin Kash. It is the centre of a region producing jade and precious stones. In addition, carpets, silk, silk goods, felt, and hides are manufactured. It is linked by road and air with other towns in Xinjiang.

West of Hotan are the ruins of Yurtugan, an ancient capital of a pre-Islamic kingdom that existed from the 3rd to the 8th century AD.
