Höffer, Paul (1895-1949)

German composer. He trained as a pianist at first, in Cologne, and later studied composition with Schreker in Berlin, where he became professor of piano at the Hochschule für Musik in 1923 and professor of composition in 1930. He was appointed director in 1948, but died of a heart attack soon after.

Works

operas Borgia (1931) and Der falsche Waldemar (1934), three children's operas; incidental music for Shakespeare's Coriolanus, Goethe's Faust, etc.; four oratorios including Der reiche Tag (1938) and Von edlen Leben (1941) and other choral works; symphonies, two serenades, etc. for orchestra; various concertos; three string quartets, clarinet quintet, wind sextet.
