HII region

In astronomy, region of extremely hot ionized hydrogen, surrounding one or more hot stars, visible as a bright patch or emission nebula in the sky. The gas is ionized by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the stars within it. HII regions are often associated with interstellar clouds in which new stars are being born. An example is the Orion nebula. The HII region takes its name from a spectroscopic notation in which HI represents neutral hydrogen (H) and HII represents ionized hydrogen (H+).
