Hipparcos

Satellite launched by the European Space Agency to orbit the Earth from 1989 to 1993. Named after the Greek astronomer Hipparchus, it was the world's first astrometry satellite, mapping the precise positions, distances, colours, brightnesses, and apparent motions of stars. This resulted in a catalogue of more than 2.5 million stars, published in 2000.

To track the motion of nearby stars as they move across the sky, Benoit Famaey of the Free University of Brussels in Belgium and his collaborators used data from the European Space Agency's Hipparcos satellite, which ended its mission in 1993.
