Homs

City and administrative centre of Homs governorate, west Syria, near the Orontes River; population (2003 est) 729,700. Silk, cereals, and fruit are produced in the area, and industries include silk textiles, oil refining, and jewellery. Known in ancient times as Emesa, it was once famous for its Temple of the Sun. Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, was defeated here by the Roman emperor Aurelian in 272.

It is the railway junction for lines from Beirut and Damascus and an important route centre and market. Here the oil pipeline from Iraq branches to Tripoli and Baniyas.
