Ha Bac

Province of northeast Vietnam; area 4,614 sq km/1,781 sq mi; population (1993 est) 2,262,800. The capital is Bac Ninh. The railway to the Chinese border, an important trade route, passes through the province. Ha Bac is densely populated. The main products are rice and cassava, and there is agro-industrial processing.

Ha Bac is the site of the Van Phuc and But Thap pagodas. Van Phuc pagoda was founded in 1037. But Thap pagoda (also known as Ninh Phuc pagoda) has a 4-storey stone stupa (domed structure) dedicated to the monk Chu yet Cong. But Thap was rebuilt in the 17th or 18th centuries.
