Halong Bay

Junks in Halong Bay, northern Vietnam. Until recently closed to foreigners, Halong Bay (or Bay of the Descending Dragon) is one of the most scenic spots in northern Vietnam, with its calm waters and many limestone mountains dotting the seascape.

Bay in northeast Vietnam, on the Gulf of Tonkin. Halong Bay is one of Vietnam's natural marvels, with about 3,000 small islands. On the shore of the bay is the Hon Gay open-cast coal mine, covering an area of 1,500 sq km/580 sq mi. The largest of the islands in the bay, Cat Ba, is a national park.
