Ha Tien

    0.03 sec.

Ha Tien

Town of southern Vietnam, situated on the coast on the Gulf of Thailand, 8 km/5 mi from the Cambodian border; population (1989) 80,000. There are white sand beaches and fishing villages in the area. Products include seafood, pepper, and turtleshell handicrafts.

Ha Tien suffered many attacks by Khmer Rouge forces from Cambodia in the late 1970s, as a result of which many people left the town.

Founded by a Chinese merchant in about 1690, Ha Tien soon became an important port and the capital of a virtually independent principality; it was not fully absorbed into Vietnam until about 1800.
