Hat Yai

City in Songkhla province, southwest Thailand; population (2000 est) 185,600. Sited on the Bangkok-Singapore railway, Hat Yai is a busy commercial and railway centre, and is the administrative centre for Thailand's southern region. It has an important rubber research institute. Production of rubber is the main industry, but cotton and silk production are also important. The city lies on the U Taphao River in a part of the Malay Peninsula which has rich tin resources.
