Haarlem, Lake

Area of land in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands, reclaimed 1840-53 from a lake. It lies between Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Leiden, and covers some 180 sq km/69 sq mi. The international airport of Schiphol is sited in this area.

The lake was originally formed by a great flood in the 16th century. It is now a triangular expanse of fertile land.
