Habana, La

Province in western Cuba, bounded to the north by the Straits of Florida and Ciudad la Habana province, to the west by Pinar del Río province, and to the east by the province of Matanzas; area 5,731 sq km/2,213 sq mi; population (1990 est) 647,300. Its capital is the city of Havana. The province yields considerable quantities of sugar cane, tobacco, fruits, vegetables, and milk for the Havana market. Many industrial plants are located in and around the capital. A thermal power plant is situated at Marial, a port and major centre for ship-trawling.
