Habte-wold, Tshafe Tezaz Aklilu (1912-1974)

Ethiopian prime minister 1961-74. He accompanied Emperor Haile Selassie into exile following the Italian invasion. In 1941 he returned to Ethiopia and was appointed vice foreign minister and, two years later, foreign minister. He played an important role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU; later African Union) in Addis Ababa in 1963. He became deputy prime minister in 1957 and prime minister in 1961. He was forced to resign in 1974, following the unrest caused by the government's handling of the 1973 famine. Later the same year he was executed by the regime that ousted Haile Selaisse.

Habte-wold was born in Addis Ababa and studied law at the Sorbonne, Paris.
