Hachette, Jeanne (born c. 1454)

French national heroine. During the siege of Beauvais by Charles the Bold of Burgundy (1472), the women of the town, commanded by Jeanne, defended and saved it after the garrison was reduced to 300 men.

She was born at Beauvais. The name ‘Hachette’ was derived from the weapon with which she was armed.
