Hachioji

Industrial city in the Kanto region of Honshu island, Tokyo prefecture, 45 km/28 mi west of Tokyo; population (1995 est) 503,400. Many of its residents are Tokyo commuters and the city is the chief commercial centre for the western side of the Tokyo-Yokohama conurbation, with industries including silk weaving, synthetic textiles, light engineering, precision instruments, chemical production, and electrical appliances.

A number of central Tokyo universities have relocated to Hachioji because of spiralling land prices in the capital.
