Haddam

Town in Middlesex County, south-central Connecticut; population (1990) 6,800. Haddam is situated on the Connecticut and Salmon rivers, 39 km/24 mi northeast of New Haven.

Haddam is a summer resort, with some agriculture and light manufacturing. It was formerly a shipbuilding and shad and salmon fishing centre. The Connecticut Yankee nuclear plant at Haddam Neck, east of the Connecticut River, went into operation in 1967. Suburbs of Haddam include Tylerville, Shailerville, Ponset, and Higganum. The Goodspeed Opera House, popular since the 19th century, is in the adjoining settlement of East Haddam (population 6,700).
