Hadow, W(illiam) H(enry) (1859-1937)

English educationist and music scholar. He was educated at Malvern College and Oxford, where later he lectured on music, having studied at Darmstadt, Germany, and under C H Lloyd. He was principal of Armstrong College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1909-19, and vice-chancellor of Sheffield University 1919-30. He edited the Oxford History of Music and wrote volume v, The Viennese Period (1904); other books include Studies in Modern Music (1892, 1894, revised 1926) and English Music (1931). He also composed chamber music and songs.
