Hagåẗa

Capital of Guam, in the western Pacific, one of the Mariana Islands; population (1995 est) 1,300. It is a US naval base and administrative centre of the island, bordered by residential Hagåẗa Heights and Apra Harbor.

The town was largely destroyed during World War II; growth has since been confined to the nearby business centres of Tamung and Piti. There is a cathedral dating from 1669 and a university dating from 1952.
