City in Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan, situated on the delta of the Abu River, which flows into the Sea of Japan; population (1995 est) 48,300. A kind of citrus called natsumikan, which can be made into a preserve, is grown in the area. High-fired pottery, which dates from the 16th century, is much valued for the tea ceremony, and is still produced by over 100 potters in the city, which also produces bamboo goods.

In the area are a number of castle ruins, including Hagi castle, the Sho Temple, and a district of samurai residences. Samurai from Hagi played a significant part in the Meiji restoration of 1868, from which time there has been little economic development.
