Hailey

City and seat of Blaine County, in south-central Idaho; population (2000) 6,200. Hailey lies on the Big Wood River and the Sawtooth Scenic Route, 24 km/15 mi south-southeast of Ketchum. Founded in 1881, it was once the thriving centre of a rich gold, silver, and lead mining region.

Idaho's first telephone exchange and electric light plant were inaugurated in Hailey. It is now a summer resort, headquarters of the Sawtooth National Forest, and a trade centre for a livestock and timber producing and mining area. The poet Ezra Pound was born here in 1885.
