Hakluyt, Richard (c. 1552-1616)English geographer whose chief work is The Principal Navigations, Voyages and Discoveries of the English Nation (1598-1600). He was assisted by Sir Walter Raleigh. Readers of Hart's lucid study are likely to find coverage of previously littleknown but significant writers and fresh treatments of such familiar figures as Richard Hakluyt, Walter Ralegh, and Andre Thevet. Flip to the pages devoted to Point Reyes on California's northern coast, for example, and you'll find an excerpt from the journal of Richard Hakluyt, who landed somewhere along this coast with British seafarer Sir Francis Drake in 1579. Between these two dates, ten accounts (excluding a poem) were published, some by Richard Hakluyt and Purchas who edited and "censored" the accounts, and others by independent printers who were eager to capitalize on the market for such accounts. |
