Hakodate

Port in Hokkaido, Japan; population (2005) 294,300. Industries include fish canning, and the processing of marine products. Exports include timber and sulphur. The surrounding Hakodate plain produces rice, potatoes, and vegetables. In 1854 Hakodate was the earliest port opened to the West after the period of isolation. It was formerly the island's capital until replaced by Sapporo.

The city is situated near the southern extremity of the Oshima peninsula and faces the Tsugaru Strait which separates Hokkaido from Honshu. The ferry service to Aomori was replaced by a rail link with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988.
