Halberstadt

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, in the foothills of the Harz Mountains, 48 km/30 mi southwest of Magdeburg; population (1995) 42,700. Textile, chemical, rubber, and paper manufactures are being replaced by lighter industries, such as light engineering and telecommunications. Halberstadt has a 14th-century Rathaus (town hall) and the cathedral of St Stephen's (13th–17th centuries).

The town's main architectural features are associated with the cathedral, including the Treasury, the Bishop's Palace, and the Deanery; and other religious foundations such as the 12th-century Church of Our Lady.

Kostelanetz looks to James Joyce's Finnegans Wake as an example of maximal art, though John Cage's Europera, a bricolage of costumes and sounds and even program notes from operas, might be a better example, as might be Cage's Organ (2)/ASLSP ("as slow as possible"), a piece that is now being performed in Halberstadt, Germany, a performance that is slated to last 639 years.
Next time your church organist gets carried away and plays too long or too slowly, just think of Halberstadt and count your blessings.
