Haldimand

Town in the Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Municipality; population (1991) 20,600. Haldimand is situated in the extreme south of Ontario, on Lake Erie (south) and the Grand River, 35 km/22 mi south of Hamilton.

Created in 1974, Haldimand incorporates a number of separate settlements established in the mid-19th century, on land that once belonged to the Iroquois people of the Six Nations. The suburbs of Caledonia (north), on the Grand River, and Cayuga (central), further down the river and now the town centre, were formerly centres of the dairy industry and mining (gypsum, natural gas, sandstone, and limestone). Today Haldimand is largely residential, with resorts along the lake shore.
