Hale, Philip Leslie

Hale, Philip Leslie (1865–1931)

US painter and critic. He went to Paris in 1887 and joined Claude Monet's Impressionist circle at Giverny. He returned to the USA in 1890 as ‘the boldest of the American Impressionists’. Despite his openness to new styles in his painting and writings, he never gained much acclaim and is best known for his critical study, Jan Vermeer of Delft (1913). He was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Hew was married to the painter Lilian Hale and was father of writer Nancy Hale.
