Hale, William Jay

Hale, William Jay (1876–1955)

US chemical engineer. During World War I, he conducted research on mustard gas for the US government. In 1919 he became director of organic chemical research at Dow Chemical. He made contributions to the production of phenol, indigo, chloracetic acid, and phenyl alcohol. Hale was born in Ada, Ohio.
