Haley, Jay

Haley, Jay (1923- )

US psychologist and family therapist. As a director of family experimentation at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, he did influential work in family therapy and published with Lynn Hoffman Techniques of Family Therapy (1967). He was the director of family research at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic (1967-74), and in 1974 became the director of the Family Therapy Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Haley was born in Midwest, Wyoming, He was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University; at the latter he was a research associate at the Project for Study of Communications.
