Hall, Richard (1903–1982)

English composer and teacher. He studied at Cambridge, and after early church appointments was professor of composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music 1938–56, where he taught Goehr, Maxwell Davies, and Birtwistle. He was director of music at Dartington Hall 1956–67. His works, which were influenced by Hindemith, included five symphonies (1941–64) and two string quartets (1946, 1973).
