Hall, Stanley

Hall, (Granville) Stanley (1846–1924)

US psychologist, philosopher, and educator. A founder and leader of the child-study movement, he published such works as The Contents of Children's Minds (1883) and the two-volume Adolescence (1904). He was also a prolific and influential writer on secondary and higher education and, particularly after 1911, psychology, and he strongly influenced the development of educational psychology in America. He founded the American Journal of Psychology (1887) and the American Psychological Association (1891).

Hall was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts. He graduated with a PhD from Harvard University, and also trained in Germany in physiology and experimental psychology. Hall established at Johns Hopkins University what became the country's leading experimental psychology laboratory (1882). He was also the first president of Clark University (1888–1920), which was originally modelled along German lines as an institution for scientific research.
