Hallén, (Johan) Andreas (1846–1925)

Swedish conductor, critic, and composer. He studied at Leipzig, Munich, and Dresden, and later worked mainly at Göteborg and Stockholm.

Works

operas Harold der Wiking (in German, produced at Leipzig in 1881), Hexfällan (later revised as Valborgsmässan, and produced in Stockholm in 1902), and Valdemarsskatten; ballads for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; symphonic suite Gustaf Vasas Saga, symphonic poems ‘The Island of the Dead’ (after Böcklin's picture, 1898; pre-dates work by Rakhmaninov of same title by 11 years), Sounds of the Spheres, Autumn and A Summer Saga, two rhapsodies for orchestra; instrumental pieces; songs.
