Halland

County of southwest Sweden on the Kattegat strait, opposite Denmark; area 4,930 sq km/1,903 sq mi; population (1990 est) 244,400. It is a low-lying coastal region of heaths and ridges; the west coast has long sandy beaches. Its capital is Halmstad.

Halland is said to have been acquired by the Danish hero Dan in the 6th century; it was ceded by Denmark to Sweden at the peace of Bromsebro in 1645.
