Hallandale

City in Broward County, southeastern Florida; population (1990) 31,000. Situated just south of Hollywood and 21 km/13 mi north of Miami, Hallandale was settled by Scandinavian farmers in the 1890s.

Hallandale was hit by disastrous hurricanes in 1906, 1910, and 1926. Its location on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway has seen it grow since 1960 as a popular beachfront and boating resort. Recreational facilities include the Gulfstream Race Track and a greyhound track. The city is also a residential centre and a popular place for retirement. Its industries process fruits and vegetables and manufacture chemicals and furniture.
