Hallein

Town in the Austrian province of Salzburg, on the River Salzach, 12 km/7 mi south of the town of Salzburg; population (2001) 18,600. It is a tourist resort, and has marble, paper, and rayon industries. A large salt mine, worked since the Bronze Age, is now open to the public.
