Hallidie, Andrew (Smith) (1836-1900)

English-born US engineer and inventor. He designed and built many bridges in California. In 1871 he perfected the cable railroad, the invention for which he is best remembered. He introduced San Francisco's famous cable cars in 1873. An inventor's son, he was born in London, England, and emigrated to California with his father in 1852, becoming a mining engineer.
