Hallowell

City in Kennebec County, southwestern Maine; population (1990) 2,500. Halowell lies on the Kennebec River, in a natural amphitheatre formed by hills, about 3 km/2 mi south of Augusta, of which it is a suburb.

The settlement at Hallowell, along with Gardiner, was originally part of the 405 sq km/156 sq mi Kennebec Purchase (1754). In the 19th century, it became an important industrial, commercial, agricultural, and social centre. It contains many fine examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture.
