Halstead

Market town in Essex, England, on the River Colne, 23 km/14 mi northwest of Colchester; population (2001) 11,050. Industries include the manufacturing of textiles and electrochemical products.

Chantry House incorporates some remains of a college said to have been founded in 1411. Nearby is the ancient town of Castle Hedingham, with a Norman keep and a large 12th-century church.
