Halton Hills

Town in Halton Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, 43 km/27 mi west of Toronto; population (1991) 36,800. It was created in 1974 by joining Acton and Georgetown with Esquising township. Once the centre of a dairying and quarrying region, it is becoming increasingly residential.

The Acton district of Halton Hills was a tannery centre in the 1820s, and now manufactures a wide range of farm and other machinery and leather and agricultural goods. The Blue Springs golf club here is home to the Canadian Professional Golf Association. Georgetown, now the town centre, was settled by Loyalists, and became a wool and paper miller and producer of a variety of light manufactures.
