Hamari, Julia (1942– )

Hungarian mezzo-soprano. She studied in Budapest, and in 1966 sang in Bach's St Matthew Passion at Vienna, under Richter, and the Alto Rhapsody at Rome, under Gui. She has appeared with Karajan, Solti, and Böhm as a concert singer, in works by Bach, Mahler, and Handel, and from 1973 in operas by Verdi, Gluck, and Mascagni. In 1979 she sang Celia in La fedeltà premiata, at Glyndebourne. She has appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House from 1984, as Rosina and Despina. Her other roles include Gluck's Orpheus and Handel's Cornelia.
