Hamden

Town in New Haven County, southern Connecticut; population (1990) 52,400. Hamden adjoins New Haven (to the north), and is situated on the Quinnipiac River. Settled in the 1660s and separated from New Haven in 1786, it includes the villages of Whitneyville, Spring Glen, and Mount Carmel.

Primarily residential, Hamden has some industry, including the manufacture of machine tools, firearms, and insulated wire, and is home to Quinnipiac College (1929). Sleeping Giant State Park is situated north of the town. A tablet near Lake Whitney Dam, on the Mill River, a Quinnipiac tributary, marks the location of a factory established here in 1798 by Eli Whitney that pioneered in the use of interchangeable machine parts and led to the development of the Winchester firearms company.

Hamden

Town in Delaware County, southern New York State; population (1990) 1,100. Hamden lies on the Delaware River, in the Catskill Mountains, 80 km/50 mi east of Binghamton. It was the birthplace of educator James E Russell (1864–1945).
