Hamerik, Ebbe (1898–1951)

Danish conductor and composer, and the son of Asger Hamerik. He was a pupil of his father and of Frank van der Stucken. He was conductor of the royal theatre at Copenhagen 1911–22, and of the Musikforeningen there 1927–30. He then went to live in Austria, but returned home in 1934. He was drowned in the Kattegat strait.

operas Stepan (1924), Leonardo da Vinci (1939), Marie Grubbe (after Jacobsen) and Rejsekammeraten/The Travelling Companion (after Andersen, 1946); five symphonies (1937–50), Quasi Passacaglia e Fuga, Variations on an old Danish folk-tune; two string quartets; suite for contralto and chamber orchestra; piano pieces; organ works; songs.
