Hammerklavier

Alternative name for the piano, used to distinguish it from the harpsichord, in which the strings are plucked. Beethoven designated his sonatas Op. 101 and 106 as ‘für das Hammerclavier’, and the word is now used as a nickname for the latter sonata.
