Hammerstein, Oscar (1846–1919)

German-born US theatrical impresario. He built several theatres, including the Manhattan Opera House in 1906, and brought many fine singers to the USA. He was born in Stettin, Germany, and was the grandfather of Oscar Hammerstein II.
