Hamming, Richard W(esley) (1915-1998)

US computer scientist. Head of the Computing Science Research Department at Bell Laboratories (1946), he specialized in problem-solving on large-scale computers and computer design. He was editor of several journals, and wrote Numerical Methods for Scientists and Engineers (1962). Hamming was founder of the Association for Computing Machinery. He was born in Chicago, Illinois.
